Afromask
A digital art collection by Ethiopian artists Fanuel Leul and Tsegaw Tesfa
About Afromask
'Afromask is our interpretation of the African mask making culture. We understood that maskmaking is a gateway to the African culture. We are drawn to the sacred traditions of mask making in African culture. It is with humility and deep respect for this tradition that we present Afromask. Through Afromask, we aim to translate the essence and symbolism of traditional masks into a modern and mainstream context. This series is an exploration of our emotion when looking at traditional african masks. Our intention is not to detract from the rich history and cultural significance of traditional African masks. Instead, we see ourselves as a continuation of the legacy of mask-makers. In our own unique interpretation, we hope to pay homage to and honor the deep spiritual and symbolic meanings of the original masks. Ultimately, we hope that our series of reimagined masks serves as a bridge between past and present, tradition and modernity and to give honor to those who have come before us.' - Fanuel Leul and Tsegaw Tesfa
Afromask Exhibition was launched at KIKUNDI Gallery, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2023. Each piece is printed on art grade canvas with a wooden frame.
